ABOUT
Chinese New Year celebrations return to Southampton’s city centre to usher in Chinese New Year Southampton 2023, Year of the Rabbit. We’ll be marking the Lunar New Year with a programme of fun and frivolity in the spirit of the Rabbit’s happy nature. We’ll be hosting an original stage show, free workshops, Lion and Dragon dancing and many more favourite activities. Our main Chinese New Year event is on Saturday 21st January 2023, and our Lantern Festival marks the end of the two week holiday on Saturday 4th February 2023.
Southampton CNY23: It’s Time to Celebrate
2023 is the Year of the Water Rabbit and its animal symbolises a calm energy, and an easy-going nature. Our festivities pay homage to the rabbit’s attributes by sharing ways to ease into the new year, as well as, celebrating all of the fun of the holiday. There will be plenty of activities for people of all ages to enjoy and we can’t wait to share more with you very soon.

THE CELEBRATIONS
Chinese New Year Southampton 2023 celebrates Chinese New Year by encouraging everyone to replenish their energies ahead of the New Lunar Year. The celebrations begin on Saturday 21st January 2023 . The festivities will be take place in Southampton’s Guildhall Square and the Mayflower Studios MAST centre in the heart of Southampton’s city centre.
Visitors will find public displays including traditional Chinese Lion and Dragon performances, free cultural and craft workshops and a ticketed Chinese New Year celebration show to showcase region’s most talented performance artists.
With the Year of the Water Rabbit about to begin, our CNY2023 celebrations offers a range of activities to promote mental- health, fitness, and community to encourage visitors to tend to their health and wellbeing ahead of the New Lunar Year.
The Chinese New Year celebrations continue with Southampton’s Chinese Lantern Festival with art displays, stalls and workshops being held in Southmapton Guildhall Square on Saturday 4th February 2023. More information about this event can be found here.
YEAR OF THE RABBIT
IMPORTANT CHINESE NEW YEAR DATE 2023
Chinese New Year 2023 will fall on Sunday 22nd January, 2023. The Chinese New Year animal sign for 2023 is the Water Rabbit . As a public holiday, Chinese people will get 7 days off from work from January 21st to January 27th in 2023.
Celebrations of Chinese New Year traditionally last for 16 days, starting from Chinese New Year’s Eve to the Lantern Festival. In 2023, the holiday begins on January 21st, 2023, and lasting until February 5th, 2023.
Traditionally Chinese Lunar New Year activities start as early as three weeks before Chinese New Year’s Eve. People prepare for the celebrations by a thorough spring cleaning of their homes, getting a new haircut, and restocking essential items in their wardrobes.

Preparations for the new year begin on January 21st , 2023, and last until New Year’s Eve.
